CLI Runner Credentials and Module Registry Improvements
This release (v2026.9.7) tightens how the CLI uses cloud credentials and makes module preview and upload failures easier to understand. Here's what you can now do:
- Reuse StackGen Vault runner credentials for local CLI provision and destroy.
- Preview modules from private Git imports, and get a clear message when a module has no files.
- See actionable errors when a custom module upload fails (including empty directories and bad
stackgen.yaml).
Here's everything in this release:

What's New
CLI Runner Credentials
You can run local CLI provision and destroy with the same encrypted credentials stored in StackGen Vault for your environment's runner configuration.
Pass --use-runner-credentials so the CLI resolves runner credentials for that environment and injects them into the command context. Credentials are not written to disk, and they are not set as global environment variables on your machine.
stackgen provision --appstack <appstack-id-or-name> -e <environment> --use-runner-credentials
stackgen destroy --appstack <appstack-id-or-name> -e <environment> --use-runner-credentials
Configure runner credentials in StackGen for the environment first. See Provision infrastructure with StackGen and Destroy StackGen-Provisioned Infrastructure.
What's Fixed
Previewing Empty Modules Triggers a Server Error
Previously, previewing a module that had no files could fail with a generic internal server error.
Preview now returns a clear message when the module has nothing to show, so you know why the preview did not open.
Previewing Private Repo Modules Fails
Previously, Preview could fail for modules imported from a private Git repository, and error toasts could fill the screen and ignore the close control.
You can now preview imported private-repo modules from the Module Catalog. Error toasts stay compact and dismissible when something still goes wrong.
Uploading Invalid stackgen.yaml Triggers a Server Error
Previously, uploading a custom module with an invalid stackgen.yaml (CLI or Import Module) could fail with a generic server error that was hard to act on.
Invalid stackgen.yaml is now called out with a clearer error, so you can fix the file and retry.
Uploading Empty Terraform Directories Succeeds
Previously, stackgen upload custom-modules --dir could succeed when the folder had no .tf files.
Uploading an empty Terraform directory is now blocked with a clear error, so you only publish modules that actually contain Terraform code.
